Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - On August 13, 1921, women got the explicit right to vote in Georgia.
While the 19th Amendment was ratified nationally in 1920, not all states played by the rules.
Georgia women were still barred from voting in the 1920 election even after getting the constitutional right to vote because Georgia leaders refused to remove the six-month voter registration rule that was in place.
A whole year went by before Georgia Governor Thomas Hardwick signed a state act that finally gave Georgia women the right to vote
Georgia didn’t formally ratify the 19th amendment until 50 years later in 1970.
In the most recent presidential election, women made up about 56% of voters in Georgia.
