ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Community members say they are disheartened by an Albany shooting that killed 21-year-old Brandon Jones, who was shot in the head Monday night, June 1, according to the Albany Police Department (APD).
According to an incident report, Jones and Amadius Bush, 24, were inside a 2012 Jeep Liberty. Bush, the driver, reportedly heard gunshots and turned down an alleyway between a Family Dollar and a local car shop, Mad Hatter Muffler on North Slappey Boulevard. Investigators observed Jones with a gunshot wound on the right side of his head, and the vehicle had multiple bullet holes on the exterior. Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler pronounced Jones dead at the scene.

Marcus Young, an employee at the Family Dollar next to the alleyway, said he was not working Monday night but was hesitant about coming in the next day.
“When I saw the footage and stuff, I was like, ‘Wait, that’s close to my job,’” Young said. “I feel like the area was mainly unsafe and moving forward, I would like for more cameras with great quality to be installed.”
Young also said he would like to see a security presence more consistently established.
“All the gun violence would probably be brought to a minimum,” he said. “Because when they see law enforcement everywhere, then they’d be hesitant to shoot.”

Store manager Russell Jones told WALB that the Family Dollar does not have security during store operations. Jones said after the night shooting, having an officer stationed at the store and patrolling the area is critical.
Johnny Green, the finance manager at the neighboring Mad Hatter Muffler, said the shooting left him shaken and searching for answers.
“Reactions are distraught, horrific, terrible, saddened,” Green said. “I’m just in awe of how the situation just keeps going on and on.”
Green, who grew up in Albany, said the city’s longtime nickname is no longer a reality.
“Albany is still ironically called the Good Life City, but there’s no good life,” Green said. “For who? For our children, for our young people coming up today, those that are aspiring to be something successful and positive in life here in Albany.”
Green said older generations and business owners share responsibility for changing the culture.
“It’s not just for us to look at the young and say, ‘Oh, look at them. Look what they’re doing,’” Green said. “Look at what we’re doing and what we’re not doing. What have I contributed to the community? What have I done to help, to give them hope and reason?”
The Albany Police Department has not announced any arrests. Investigators listed three persons of interest. The investigation is ongoing.
