ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Georgia drivers are seeing record-high Labor Day gas prices this year, driven by expensive crude oil and heavy holiday travel demand, according to AAA.

Across the Peach State, the average price for gas is now $3.89, a 12-cent increase from last week and almost a dollar more than this time last year.

Meanwhile, the national average price of gas is at $4.14 per gallon, according to AAA. That’s a 7 cent hike from last week.

“Gas is five dollars for real,” Keyunna Center said. “It is too expensive.”

The high costs are heavily impacting gig-economy workers, including Lyft driver Tim Hunter, who has adjusted his driving habits to avoid wasting fuel.

“We have on the app itself a function that we can go and stay in a certain area, so a lot of times I’ll just do Cobb, Paulding, Bartow and stay within a 15-mile radius,” Hunter said.

Gas prices reportedly rose following a U.S. conflict with Iran that began in February.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said relief may be coming in the next few months as summer travel winds down and demand drops.

“The Trump Administration has changed blending requirements for American refiners, which allows them to produce more gasoline. Gasoline production is about to go up, and demand is about to go down,” Wright said.

Until the savings hit the pump, drivers tough it out.

“I’d like to see it come down a whole dollar, but I’ve had to cut back on a few things,” Hunter said.

Shop smarter (fastest savings)

• Compare prices before you drive — differences of 20 to 60 cents a gallon can happen within a few miles.
• Avoid highway exits and convenience-heavy intersections if you can.
• Fill up earlier in the week if you notice prices rising day over day.
• AAA recommends drivers use price-tracking apps to check rates before filling up.
• Additionally, motorists can avoid credit card surcharges by paying with cash, which some gas stations offer at a lower rate.

Drive for better MPG

• Gentle acceleration and steady speeds help more than people think.
• Reduce idling, especially in long pick-up lines.
• Use cruise control when traffic allows.

Quick car fixes that pay back

• Check tire pressure monthly. The lower the pressure, the lower your miles per gallon.
• Clear out extra weight in the trunk or cargo area.
• Keep up with routine maintenance, like oil changes and filter replacements.
