Description

DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) — Two of South Georgia’s top-ranked teams meet Friday night in Douglas in a Region 2-6A matchup between No. 3 Coffee and No. 4 Lee County.

Coffee is 5-0 and has won every game by at least 20 points, averaging nearly 300 yards per game on the ground. Lee County is 4-1, coming off a loss to top-ranked Thomas County Central.

Coffee’s ground game

Coffee’s offense features quarterback Tyler Dowling, running back Bobby Reynolds, tight end Xavier Littleton and a front line led by Messiah Mack and sophomore center Marquez Curry. Reynolds has more than 500 rushing yards this season.

“Just the same as it always is. Focus on us. Get as good as we can possibly get, right?” Coffee coach Mike Coe said. “Try to improve on some things that we’ve been messing up on.”

Lee County looks to bounce back

Lee County has won seven straight games in the series against Coffee, including a 48-14 victory last season. The Trojans’ offense is led by quarterback Cohen Lawson, wide receiver Jayden Upshaw and running back Jordan Bush.

“Our kids have done a great job this week, you know, learning from last week’s game,” Lee County coach Dean Fabrizio said. “That’s the thing when you play a top-level team like that. It exposes any little weakness or any mistakes you make.”

Lee County’s front includes linebackers Jace Murray and Greg Batson.

“We moved the ball well last week,” Fabrizio said. “We didn’t finish drives. I think we got to the five once and didn’t score, and then we got inside the 20 another time and didn’t score. So we’ve got to be able to finish drives, and also we can’t turn the ball over. We’ve got to do a great job with ball security. The two turnovers last week in the first half really hurt us.”

Coffee’s defense

Coffee’s defense includes Kadrian Wooten, Tresean Smith and senior linebacker Jordan Solomon.

“We look at each other and communicate the call from the linebacker at the second level,” Solomon said, “and then we communicate it to the D-line, communicate it to the back end, make sure we’re all on the same page.”

Quarterback Tyler Dowling described the matchup’s approach.

“Outworking the other guy, making him want to tap out and don’t want to play no more.”

Kickoff is Friday night at Jardine Stadium in Douglas.
