WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping engaged in a 90-minute phone call this week that could signal a breakthrough in the ongoing trade tensions between the United States and China.
"We had a very good talk," Trump said Thursday, expressing optimism about the trade war with China, which has seen escalating tariffs and negotiations.
Trump said the two leaders have extended mutual invitations for official visits, with the President planning to take China up on the offer.
"He invited me to China and I invited him here. We both accepted, so I'll be going there with the first lady at a certain point and he'll be coming here hopefully with the first lady of China," he told reporters in the Oval Office Thursday.
Before these visits, trade teams from both nations are set to meet again to negotiate a deal.
In April, the U.S. increased tariffs to 145% on Chinese goods, prompting China to respond with 125% tariffs. A temporary truce led to a 90-day pause on these tariffs, and new talks are anticipated.
"There was a clear mandate and understanding between the two presidents and we expect that the meeting will take place within seven days," White House Senior Counselor for Trade & Manufacturing Peter Navarro said on Friday.
According to Trump, the call focused primarily on trade. However, a Chinese readout included a warning from Xi to handle the issue of Taiwan independence "prudently" to avoid conflict.
Additionally, the conversation touched on the topic of Chinese students in the U.S. The State Department recently announced plans to "aggressively" revoke visas for Chinese students in critical fields and those with ties to the Communist Party, with the crackdown angering Chinese officials. The Chinese readout indicated the topic was brought up between the two world leaders and that students would be welcomed to the U.S.
"Chinese students are coming, no problem. No problem. We want to have foreign students, but we want them to be checked," Trump said Thursday.
Trump previously visited China in 2017 during his first term, where he met with Xi at an official state dinner in Beijing.
