WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump is attending a House GOP meeting on Capitol Hill Tuesday morning to try and unify the party and push his "big, beautiful bill" forward as the 1,116-page agenda is at risk of collapsing ahead of planned votes this week.
Republicans advanced the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" in a late-night vote Sunday as leaders look to pass it by Memorial Day.
The bill includes provisions to make 2017 tax cuts permanent, allocates over $46 billion for the construction of a southern border wall, and provides $4 billion to hire additional border agents and customs officers. It also proposes $150 billion more for defense spending. To fund these initiatives, the bill suggests a nearly $800 billion reduction to Medicaid, introducing work requirements that could potentially remove millions from the program.
The House Rules Committee will take a look at the bill next and make any last-minute changes before it moves on to the Senate.
White House Press Secretary Karolina Leavitt told reporters Monday that Trump has been "very involved" and has been in touch with Speaker Mike Johnson.
“He’s willing to pick up the phone when he is asked to. So he’ll continue to be very engaged in this process with both House members and his friends on the Senate side as well," Leavitt said.
Johnson told reporters on Sunday that there are still details to "iron out."
"There’s a lot more work to do, we’ve always acknowledged that towards the end there will be more details to iron out, we have several more to take care of," he said.
With House Democrats lined up against the package, GOP leaders have almost no votes to spare. A key committee hearing is set for the middle of the night Tuesday in hopes of a House floor vote by Wednesday afternoon.
Democrats argue the package is little more than a giveaway to the wealthy at the expense of health care and food programs Americans rely on.
“They literally are trying to take health care away from millions of Americans at this very moment in the dead of night," said House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York.
