WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump said in an interview on Sunday that there is a "buyer for TikTok" and teased an announcement in "about two weeks."
The president would not say who the buyer is on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo," only noting it is "a group of wealthy people."
"I think I’ll need probably China approval, and I think President Xi will probably do it,” he added.
Trump extended the app's ban for a third time on June 19, setting a new deadline for September 17, 2025.
The new executive order gives Trump time to broker a deal to bring the social media platform, which is owned by China's ByteDance, under American ownership.
Trump delayed the initial ban for 75 days when he returned to office in January. He stated in the order that the delay was meant “to allow my Administration an opportunity to determine the appropriate course forward in an orderly way that protects national security while avoiding an abrupt shutdown of a communications platform used by millions of Americans.”
The second delay was in April when White House officials believed they were nearing a deal to spin off TikTok into a new company with U.S. ownership that fell apart after China backed out following Trump’s tariff announcement.
Since joining last year, the president has gained more than 15 million followers and credited the social platform with helping him win the election among young voters.
In January, he said he had a "warm spot for TikTok."
“Perhaps I shouldn’t say this, but I have a little warm spot in my heart for TikTok,” Trump said. “TikTok is — it’s very interesting, but it’ll be protected. It’ll be very strongly protected. But if it needs an extension, I would be willing to give it an extension, might not need it.”
President Joe Biden signed a bill last April that included a requirement for TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform to a U.S.-approved buyer within nine months or face a ban.
U.S. lawmakers had raised concerns over data security and privacy for TikTok users, as well as suspicions that the Chinese government influenced TikTok’s content.
