LEE COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) — [UPDATE: Jan. 15, 10:15 a.m.] On Thursday, Jan. 15, the Georgia State Patrol released preliminary details regarding this incident. Their preliminary findings indicate that a Hyundai Tucson was traveling the wrong way on SR 520 and struck a Honda Accord head-on.

GSP stated that the individuals in the Hyundai Tucson were transported to a local medical facility, and the driver and a passenger in the Honda Accord that was truck were pronounced deceased by the Lee County Deputy Coroner.

The statement from GSP also states that another passenger from the Honda was seriously injured and ultimately transported.

To conclude their statement, the GSP said, “The driver of the Hyundai Tucson was suspected of driving under the influence at the time.”

One man, a motorist who was among the first on-scene at this accident, jumped into action to help. Wilson Burns and his brother were able to help direct traffic and use construction tools to take the door off of a vehicle that had multiple people trapped inside.

“If that were my children, in a wreck, stuck in a vehicle— Yeah, I’d hope that every bystander there would participate and try and get my children out, so I was just doing what was in my heart to do. And you know, praying they were okay.“

[ORGINAL ARTICLE:] A car accident on U.S. Highway 82 on Wednesday, Jan. 14 evening has caused all westbound traffic to be closed off, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO).

The crash was reportedly on Highway 82 near Winifred Road.

LCSO advised that drivers avoid the area until further notice. They described the crash as a “severe traffic accident.”

In a photo shared by the LCSO at about 8:10 p.m., it appears that at least one vehicle is overturned. It looks as though several emergency agencies responded to the scene.

The section of Highway 82 West that is blocked goes from Albany to Dawson. No further details have been released as of 10:20 p.m. Wednesday.
