Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – The Albany Police Department has released new details of a tense standoff at the Mt. Zion Garden Apartments Monday night, where an Albany police officer was shot in the arm.

According to APD, on May 5, at around 5:26 p.m., officers were dispatched to 205 Slater King Drive in response to a disorderly conduct call involving a firearm. Upon arrival, police learned that David Edmonds Jr., 25, had been involved in a physical altercation with his neighbor’s boyfriend prior to the call.

When officers approached the apartment, police say Edmonds was inside with his girlfriend and two young children. According to police, he began shooting from within the apartment, striking Corporal Alexander Price in the arm. Albany Police Chief Michael Persley told WALB no officers returned fire and no other officers were injured. Witnesses told police they heard at least four shots fired.

Police immediately called the Hostage Negotiation Team, which successfully persuaded Edmonds to allow Cpl. Price and other officers to exit the scene for medical treatment. The injured officer was rushed to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery and remains in stable condition.

The standoff, which lasted over an hour, ended when the SWAT Team took Edmonds into custoday without further incident.

  • Four counts of Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer
  • Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Crime
  • Battery
  • Terroristic Threats

He is currently being held at the Dougherty County Jail.

During the standoff, Edmonds eventually released his girlfriend and two children unharmed.

Albany Police Chief Michael Persley issued a statement following the incident:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Corporal Price and all the officers involved in the recent officer-involved shooting. During this incredibly difficult time, we stand with our law enforcement community and the families affected by this tragedy. We encourage everyone in our community to remain vigilant, support one another, and prioritize safety. Together, we will get through this with strength and unity.”

The investigation is ongoing.
