ECHOLS COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - The Georgia Emergency Management Agency has issued a mandatory evacuation for some residents in Echols County.
Officials urged Wednesday, April 22, at about 12:30 p.m. that ALL residents of the Fruitland area should leave now.
According to officials, residents who live on Joe’s Lane, Worth Lane, Register Road and the Fruitland area have all been asked to immediately evacuate.
Authorities are urging residents to take essentials, pets and medication, and follow the routes and instructions of officials.
Officials said that the American Red Cross has helped organize a shelter that is available for evacuees or those who feel unsafe staying in their homes.
Residents affected by the wildfire can go to Venture of Faith Camp at 1309 GA Highway 135 South in Lake Park. Pets are welcomed, but they will be housed separately, Echols County EMA said.
Those evacuating with campers or motor homes can go to Alaphoochee tractor show grounds, located at 202 Bethel Church Road in Lake Park, for safety. To learn more about the grounds, contact Louie Culpepper at 229-356-4257 or Teresa Powell at 229-316-3190.
