FORT STEWART, Ga. (WTOC) - The U.S. Army is turning 250. Soldiers across the nation, including several from Fort Stewart, will be celebrating the milestone in our nation’s capital with a festival and parade.
Founded more than a year before the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Army has left a lasting impact on American history.
Sparked by revolution and the idea of freedom, the Army was born in 1775.
250 years later, the institution - designed to symbolize strength, patriotism and dedication to the nation - still stands.
In honor of the celebration, soldiers are remembering those who came before.
“To say that I am stepping in shoes that someone else has stepped in, it feels meaningful in the sense that I get to participate in something that other people have made great,” said Major Alex Boroff with the 3rd Infantry Division.
Dressed in uniforms from the Revolutionary War, 3rd Infantry Division soldiers from Fort Stewart will parade through Washington D.C. Saturday.
Soldiers from other units will join in the procession as well to further highlight the history and traditions of the oldest branch of the country’s military.
One tradition, while not part of the parade, is still expected. Soldiers - one young, one old - will cut a birthday cake together showing the generations united not only in celebration, but also in service.
