Description

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - The City of Valdosta has adopted a 2026 millage rate of 7.997 mills, setting the rate above the city’s calculated rollback rate of 6.133 mills.

The rate was approved following a called public hearing Thursday, August 27, at 6 p.m.

The 2026 millage rate is 1.864 mills higher than the calculated rollback rate. The rollback rate is generally the rate that would generate the same amount of property tax revenue as the previous year from existing properties, after accounting for changes in property values.

A mill represents $1 in property tax for every $1,000 of taxable assessed property value.

Finance Director Darquita Williams said the adopted rate is part of the city’s broader financial strategy and will help maintain essential services as operating costs continue to rise.

“The adoption of the 2026 millage rate reflects the City’s commitment to responsible financial management while ensuring we have the resources necessary to provide the services our residents depend on every day,” Williams said.

Property tax revenue helps fund services including public safety, infrastructure, public works, parks and recreation, community development and other city operations.

City Manager Jennifer Wheeler said the rate will also allow Valdosta to make long-term investments as the community continues to grow.

“Valdosta continues to grow, and with that growth comes a responsibility to make thoughtful investments in the services, infrastructure and people that will carry our community forward,” Wheeler said.

The city notes that the millage rate is only one factor used to determine an individual property owner’s tax bill. Taxable property value, exemptions and other factors also affect the final amount owed.

City officials say they remain focused on transparency, responsible financial management and planning for Valdosta’s continued growth while maintaining services for residents and businesses.
