TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Valdosta State athletics has been a stronghold in the Gulf South Conference for over four decades, but Friday marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Blazers, as the university announced they have accepted an invitation to join the Peach Belt Conference beginning July 1, 2027.

The Peach Belt Conference does not sponsor football, and as a result, the Blazers will continue to compete as an independent.

The move comes after a yearlong assessment by Valdosta State, an assessment detailed to WCTV by athletic director Troy Katen in July.

Valdosta State has been a member of the Gulf South Conference since 1981, winning 60 conference and nine national titles.

In a release issued by the athletic department, Katen said joining the Peach Belt is an exciting opportunity for their student-athletes.

“Membership in the PBC will reduce travel and give our student-athletes more time in the classroom. It will also give our families, fans and alumni more chances to cheer on the Blazers,” he said. “In addition, it will strengthen our recruiting within our regional footprint. The Peach Belt has a long tradition of success, and we look forward to helping raise its profile even further on the national stage.”

Valdosta State will compete in 11 Peach Belt sports, and the move will become official July 1st, 2027.
