What we know about Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk

Description

Details started to emerge Friday about Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old man arrested in connection to the assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk.

Just two days prior, Kirk was shot and killed while he was speaking onstage at an event held at Utah Valley University (UVU).

In a short statement shared online, UVU said Robinson "briefly attended " the school for one semester in 2021.

Citing unnamed sources, The Daily Mail said he is now a student at Dixie Technical College in St. George, where he is enrolled in the electrical apprenticeship program.

Who is Tyler Robinson?

During a news conference, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox confirmed Robinson is from Utah. The Daily Mail said he lives with his family in a $600,000 six-bedroom home.

According to Newsweek, the suspect's parents are Amber Jones Robinson and Matt Robinson.

Photos on social media appear to show the family smiling together. In one image, Robinson is wearing a cap and gown and embracing his mom, while another photo shows him out to eat with his dad.

Several other images also indicate he has two younger brothers.

His father tipped off authorities

Robinson's arrest was first announced by President Donald Trump on the Fox News show “Fox & Friends." The president said "someone very close to him turned him in."

It was a minister, and the minister went to a friend -- a minister who’s involved in law enforcement, by the way, and his good friend is a top U.S. marshal, and they took it from there and then it was a father got involved,” Trump said.

Cox said Robinson's loved ones cooperated with authorities, adding that a "family member" reached out to a friend and said Robinson implied he was the killer.

It was later revealed that Robinson’s father recognized his son from photos the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) released as authorities searched for the suspect.

Citing an unnamed law enforcement official, The Associated Press said Robinson's father then urged him to turn himself in. He refused at first, but then changed his mind.

His father reached out for help to their youth pastor, who also occasionally works with the U.S. Marshals, and called the agency so he could turn himself in.

Robinson's roommate

Cox said authorities also received information from Robinson's roommate. He said the roommate showed investigators messages shared on the chatting app Discord that involved a contact named Tyler and discussed a rifle wrapped in a towel, along with engraved bullets and a scope.

Cox said the bullet casings were engraved with several statements, including "Hey, fascist. Catch," as well as "If you read this, you are gay. LMAO," and "O bella ciao, bella ciao."

A strong dislike for Kirk

Cox said authorities learned Robinson became "more political" during the last few years and was vocal about not liking Kirk, who was the co-founder of the nonprofit political organization Turning Point USA.

The governor also said the suspect described Kirk as someone who is "full of hate" and mentioned during a dinner with family that Kirk would be visiting Utah.

The family member referenced a recent incident in which Robinson came to dinner prior to September 10, and in that conversation with another family member, Robinson mentioned Charlie Kirk was coming to UVU," Cox said. "They talked about why they didn't like him and the viewpoints that he had.”

Robinson's mental health

For now, Cox said no information has been revealed about Robinson's mental health.

The charges

Robinson was arrested on suspicion of capital murder, weapons, and obstruction offenses. He is expected to be formally charged early next week ahead of an initial court appearance.

Robinson might face the death penalty.

Kirk's death

Kirk was killed Wednesday by a single shot in what police said was a targeted attack. Witnesses reportedly said he was answering a question about transgender shooters when he was fatally shot.

A kid came up and asked a question about how many transgender shooters there were," Emma Pitts and Eva Terry, who are reporters for Deseret News, said as they described the scene, per CNN.
And Charlie gave him another comment and then he asked one more question, and so the question was about shooters and before Charlie Kirk could pick up the mic again, that's when the shot happened," they said.
