WASHINGTON (TNND) — Some younger Democrats are preparing to push for a caucus-wide intervention. Several lawmakers told Axios they are concerned about the aging membership, noting the recent deaths of three members.

The incumbents keep running over and over again and they're not defeated but the party isn't doing a whole lot to bring in younger candidates," said Susan MacManus, professor emerita of political science at the University of South Florida.

The impacts of the party's aging membership were felt this week, when House Republicans passed their sweeping tax cut bill by a single vote, 215-214. Several Democrats argued the deaths of Gerry Connolly, D-Va., Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., and Sylvester Turner, D-Tex., could have changed the outcome.

One lawmaker told Axios during the vote, "You see where we are, we can't afford to lose anymore members."

If those three people had been alive and voting, it very well could have failed. No question about it," MacManus said.

Since losing the presidential election in 2024, age has been a hot topic for the Democratic Party. Democratic National Committee Vice Chair David Hogg, one of the most vocal about bringing in fresh, younger faces.

I don't know if you've looked at Congress recently. We have one that is under the age of 30 (years old). That is not good for the future of the Democratic party," Hogg told CBS News in April.

On Friday, Hogg also joined the popular radio show "The Breakfast Club," sharing that he believes Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett is the young, fiery leader Democrats need to fight the GOP.

At least you know, even if you don't agree with her, you know what she stands for because she makes it very clear and people are really craving that right now," Hogg told host Charlamagne tha God.

The DNC also announced this week that it will vote in June whether to hold a redo of the election of Hogg and Pennsylvania Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta as vice chairs.

The move stemmed from a challenge to how the initial election was conducted.
