Description

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Popular gathering spots across metro Atlanta saw heightened law enforcement presence Saturday night following rumors of potential “teen takeovers,” with police confirming multiple arrests and the recovery of several firearms.

Along the Atlanta Beltline, Atlanta police confirmed they increased staffing levels as a precaution. An APD officer on scene told Atlanta News First that officers maintained an enhanced presence due to the takeover rumors. During the evening, large groups of unsupervised juveniles gathered near the Beltline corridor and nearby businesses.

Officers responded to a shots-fired call in the area of 755 North Ave. NE, which resulted in five arrests. Shortly afterward, police responded to a dispute at 789 Ponce De Leon Ave. NE, where additional individuals were taken into custody.

In total, 14 people were arrested in connection with the incidents. Officers recovered 10 firearms during the operation.

Charges among those arrested include aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a handgun by a person under the age of 18, theft by receiving stolen property (firearm), obstruction, terroristic threats, reckless conduct, fleeing and attempting to elude, and possession of marijuana (less than one ounce).

A 15-year-old female was released to a parent, who was subsequently charged with a curfew violation.

Authorities say a similar event last weekend led to more than a dozen teenagers and adults being taken into custody. In response, agencies across the metro area stepped up patrols in several high-traffic areas, including the Beltline, Cumberland Mall, and The Battery Atlanta districts.

Multiple patrol units were visible along the Beltline, with officers monitoring foot traffic and briefly detaining several individuals. Police said the show of force is intended to deter large, disruptive gatherings before they begin.

In Cobb County, law enforcement agencies are coordinating efforts around Cumberland Mall and The Battery Atlanta. The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office deployed its mounted patrol unit, with four deputies on horseback circling the mall. Units from the Cobb County Police Department, Marietta Police Department, and the Georgia State Patrol were also seen monitoring traffic and pedestrian activity in the area.

Electronic message boards and posted signage between Cumberland and The Battery warned visitors of the increased law enforcement presence. Officers said the goal was to prevent a repeat of last weekend’s arrests and ensure public safety.

The investigation remains ongoing.
