MOULTRIE, Ga. (WALB) — A 21-year-old man is dead and two suspects are in custody following a shooting in Moultrie, police confirmed on Tuesday, April 14.

Officers with the Moultrie Police Department (MPD) responded to reports of shots fired in the 10 block of 25th Street Southeast in the afternoon of Monday, April 13. While on the way, officers said they encountered a vehicle attempting to reach the hospital with a man suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police said the vehicle became disabled due to damage and could not continue. Officers then transported the victim to the hospital in a patrol car for emergency treatment.

Despite life-saving efforts, the victim, identified as Javon Jordan, later died from his injuries.

Denise Sappington, whose home was damaged, said incidents like this are rare for the neighborhood.

“I just felt like it was a safe environment because there’s a couple other veterans, so I thought it was a pretty safe,” Sappington said. “We’re not in a war zone, and this is the first time I’ve encountered something actually coming through my home. And I just feel very uncomfortable.”

Sappington said the people involved in the shooting had only lived in the area for about a month or a month and a half.

“Until then, we’ve never had anything,” she said.

Sappington said she now feels anxious in her home.

“Basically just anxiety. I mean, it increases your anxiety. You’re always watching,” she said. “I don’t feel like it’s safe here anymore.”

Authorities secured the scene and launched an investigation with assistance from the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) and other state law enforcement agencies. Officials said the investigation remains active and ongoing.

Two male suspects are currently in custody, and investigators are continuing to search for additional persons of interest, according to police.
