Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) -The Albany Police Department is investigating a string of car break-ins that occurred during Dougherty County’s spring break, with the Lake Park area neighborhood taking a big hit.
Police say the incidents involve multiple teenagers. According to police, the suspects are between 13 and 16 years old.
“If your children come home with items that you did not purchase for them or they are associated with individuals who are or have been involved in criminal activity, then we kindly ask you to question what they’re doing, intercede on their part before they become involved in a bad situation,” said Michael Persley, Albany police chief.
Community impact
Karen Hanner, a State Farm agent who has operated her office in the community since 2018, says she has seen cases like these firsthand.
“You know, they were waking up to find out that their windows had been bashed in, and the cars had been rifled through and things had been stolen. I even saw where a backpack from a little boy was throwed about someone’s yard,” Hanner said.
Hanner says situations like this are a reminder that crimes like these can happen anywhere, and people need to be prepared. She says she wants to help people get prepared for the summer months.
“The truth is you can’t always prepare for criminal activity. If people want to break into your car, they’re going to do it regardless. So, there are some things you can do to mitigate the damage that happens,” Hanner said. “If you’re going to leave your car unlocked, please don’t leave your valuables in your car. You know, take out your cash. Take out your guns especially. Take out any valuables.”
If you are a victim of one of these crimes, review your insurance policy and talk with your agent so you don’t end up paying more out of pocket.
