SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WKRC) - A woman who abused two 18-month-old children will only spend a single year behind bars, and will instead spend most of her sentence at home.
According to local outlet Jackson County Sentinel, 23-year-old Samantha Woods was arrested after officers visited her residence regarding a domestic dispute, during which they found her two 18-month-old children "neglected and in need of medical attention."
There was very little information released about the extent or specifics of the abuse, with official attention focusing more on the extremely young ages of the victims. Some have reportedly said that the young age could be a positive, but the prosecutors disagreed in the Sentinel.
"The (children's') age has been talked about like it is a good thing, like it is better to abuse and neglect babies because 'maybe they won't remember," said Jackson County Assistant District Attorney Krystina Jackson. "The truth is we have no idea the damage that has been done. From now on, we will never know when those children are put to bed at night, if they know in that moment that they are safe and loved or if they will always remember what it is like to be left dirty, alone and in pain."
The dispute, which was reportedly between Woods and her partner, was called in by a neighbor. Judge Brent Benson lauded the neighbor's action and nosiness.
"Thank God for nosey neighbors," Benson said. "I am convinced that if it had not been for those neighbors that heard your domestic spout and called the police, I don’t know what would have happened to your children. I am convinced your children wouldn’t have gotten help I don’t know what 18-month-old children remember but maybe one day, they’ll remember that a nosey neighbor may have saved their lives."
Woods was convicted of two counts of willful abuse of a child and was sentenced to the maximum of two 10-year sentences to be served consecutively, but will only spend one of those years in prison, with the rest of the sentence carried out under house arrest, per Law&Crime.
