ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Albany Police Chief Michael Persley addressed what he called “rumors” circulating on social media after a Turner Job Corps student was found dead on campus on June 21.

During a Media Monday briefing, Chief Persley said investigators are continuing to examine the death of 21-year-old Justice James, who was found unconscious outside the campus cafeteria. Police initially classified the case as suspicious, and Chief Persley said it will remain under that designation until the investigation is complete.

Medical examiners found that James tested positive for marijuana, but Chief Persley said no other narcotics were identified in the initial test results. He noted investigators have not ruled out additional findings as the investigation continues.

Chief Persley also addressed claims circulating online about James’ death. He acknowledged concerns after reports that a Turner Job Corps student made statements suggesting involvement in James’ death.

“One person who was put out as a person of interest was identified, interviewed by investigators, and it was determined at the time that the information that was given to us, it was nothing concrete, nothing to show that this person had anything to do with the death of Justice James,” Chief Persley said.

The department interviewed several others before also clearing them, he added.

Investigators obtained video from the night James was found. Additional information from the footage is expected once James’ family reviews it with police. Chief Persley closed the briefing addressing online rumors.

“For those who are continuing just spreading what somebody else said, I’m asking you kindly to be quiet,” he said. “This is hurtful to the family.”

The investigation remains ongoing. Chief Persley encouraged anyone with credible information about the case to contact the Albany Police Department.
