Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - On Monday night, dozens of Albany residents got some “insider training” on how to create a federal budget.

Albany State University (ASU) hosted Congressman Sanford Bishop and the Concord Coalition, a nonpartisan organization focused on educating citizens on fiscal policy.

The workshop put everyone in the role of a member of Congress to assemble their own 10-year federal budget within randomly assigned groups.

“You know, politics is nothing more, nothing less, than who gets what, when, and how. It’s the elected officials, whether it’s at the national level, the state level, or the local level, that make those allocations. This allows citizens to use the exercise and to really sit in the seats of the elected officials who have to make those choices,” said Bishop.

Congressman Bishop says he hopes this exercise shows residents just how challenging it can be to work on the federal budget. He says he will look at the responses from tonight’s workshop and take them under consideration when he heads back to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, July 1.
