ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Gladys Suber celebrated her 101st birthday Tuesday, May 5, and the people who care for her wanted to make sure she felt every bit of it.

Suber is the oldest resident at Evergreen Assisted Living Facility in Albany. She was born in Sasser and made her way to New York, where she worked as a seamstress, according to her niece. After more than a century of living, she is back home in Georgia.

Suber does not have any children, but the Evergreen Assisted Living Facility and her extended family helped her celebrate.

Beverly Mills, Suber’s niece, said her aunt has always been there for her family.

“She’s a great person. She’s calm, collected,” Mills said. “If you need to talk with her about anything, she’s always there to answer any questions or help you in any way. She’s 101 years old. That’s a blessing. And she’s such a nice person. She’s the person who would get to be 101 because she’s such a nice person.”

Mills said that visiting her aunt Gladys when she was growing up created fond childhood memories that she can look back on now.

“She was always, we always went to visit her once or twice a year,” Mills said. “I can remember those times going. She would always cook and just, we would just eat and it was just a joyous time.”

Mills and her cousin, Jimmy Sue King, moved Suber back to Georgia about two years ago to better take care of her.

Suber turned 101 on May 5. Employees at the assisted living facility said she is still sharp as a tack.
