BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (WALB) - Bainbridge High School issued a statement to the public after a brawl occurred during a basketball game Saturday.
The Bainbridge Bearcats hosted the Cairo Syrupmakers on Saturday, Feb. 7 when a fight started between two players, causing a scene during the game.
Following the incident, Bainbridge High School Principal Christopher Bryant issued a statement on the school’s Facebook page.
“I want to take a moment to address what occurred at last night’s boys basketball game,” Bryant said. “Let me be very clear. Fighting is never acceptable and will never be condoned.”
Bryant said the school expects all students and spectators to demonstrate sportsmanship, self control and respect at all times.
Principal praises those who showed restraint
The principal acknowledged students and fans who remained calm during the incident.
“I do want to acknowledge and appreciate the many students and fans who chose to step back, remain calm, and allow school officials and school police officers to handle the situation appropriately,” Bryant said.
He said those who showed restraint helped prevent the incident from escalating and allowed it to be addressed quickly and safely.
Bryant emphasized that sportsmanship is most evident during moments of frustration or tension.
“Choosing to trust school officials and school police officers and handle adversity the right way reflects positively on our school and on you as individuals,” he said. “This is Bearcat pride in action.”
The principal said the school will continue to hold high expectations for behavior at all school events and appreciates cooperation in maintaining a safe, respectful and positive environment.
