WASHINGTON (TNND) — Former President Joe Biden didn’t have a prostate cancer diagnosis prior to last week, according to his spokesman. The statement comes as questions over how a former President and doctors didn’t know about an aggressive form of the cancer until it hit stage 4 are swirling. The spokesman said Biden’s last prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, screening was in 2014, when the President would have been 71 or 72.
Guidelines recommend against automatically screening men over the age of 70 for the disease. Congressman Greg Murphy, R-N.C., a urologist, says the guidelines can be patient-specific.
“Why he had not gotten a PSA in a decade, really is beyond me. Is it that a doctor didn’t recommend it, or Biden didn’t accept it or what. When did he get the biopsy is critical," Rep. Murphy said Wednesday.
President Donald Trump has been screened regularly for prostate cancer, with the 78-year-old’s levels coming back normal per his physical last month. Trump addressed Biden's diagnosis Monday.
"Look, it's a very, very sad situation, I feel very badly about it, and I think people should try to find out what happened," he said.
The diagnosis comes as fallout is still ongoing from a damaging book from CNN anchor Jake Tapper and Axios Reporter Alex Thompson entitled "Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again." The book documents a cover-up of Biden’s decreasing mental acuity during his time in office.
The reporting on the former President’s mental fitness not being revealed in detail until now is also getting picked apart, from both the right and the left.
“But the point is - forgetting about the fact how weird it is that the news is selling you a book about news they should have told you was news a year ago for free," said The Daily Show host Jon Stewart on Monday night to heaps of applause from his audience.
Tapper and Thompson have been promoting the book, including a stop on Megyn Kelly's show, where the conservative skewered Tapper's coverage of the Biden White House.
“You’ve been in Washington 30 years, Jake, you and CNN have White House connections, but there was no attempt to get to the bottom of this," she said during one exchange with Tapper.
“That’s not accurate," Tapper replied.
The CNN anchor also admitted he would have covered things differently.
"This was a deterioration, this was a, this was a progression, and look, knowing what I know now, obviously I feel tremendous humility about my coverage," Tapper said during the interview.
Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson told Axios Wednesday he’s launching an investigation into the White House’s handling of Biden’s health.
