SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WKEF) -- Bomb threats forced lockdowns at two separate Springfield hospitals Saturday morning.
Clark County Dispatch confirmed both Mercy Health-Springfield Regional Medical Center and Kettering Health Springfield received threats, Mercy-Health just after 6 a.m. and Kettering Health about 45 minutes later. Dispatch said the lockdowns have been lifted.
Kettering Health released the following statement regarding the threats.
Earlier this morning, the Springfield Police Department alerted our security team that a bomb threat had been made toward Kettering Health Springfield. Based on this information, the facility was placed on a temporary lockdown. The Springfield Police Department and the Kettering Health Springfield security team searched the premises and did not find anything suspicious. The lock down has now been lifted. The safety protocols we have in place for these instances allow us to work quickly with local law enforcement to investigate threats thoroughly and ensure the safety of our patients and staff.
A representative from Mercy Health also confirmed its hospital was immediately placed on lockdown while authorities investigated. According to the statement, authorities "thoroughly" searched the facility and found no credible threat.
At Mercy Health – Springfield Regional Medical Center, one of our most important responsibilities is the safety and security of our patients, visitors, associates, and physicians. We would like to thank the Springfield Police Department as well as our onsite teams for their swift, efficient, and caring response.
Saturday's threats come after a week of bomb threats made to the City of Springfield's government buildings and schools, forcing evacuations, shutdowns and increased safety concerns. Springfield Police released a statement on Facebook Friday evening, saying it takes "any and all" threats seriously.
Springfield Chief Police Allison Elliot also spoke to Dayton 24/7 Now about the bomb threats.
"We've had a lot of situations here where things have been called-in in relation to bomb threats over the last few days. We are working closely with local and federal authorities to provide details and information so we can identify the origins of the source," said Chief Elliot.
The City of Springfield also released a statement on the multiple bomb threats over the last few days.
This morning, several community facilities in the Springfield region received bomb threats. All affected facilities were thoroughly investigated and deemed secure. We take all threats to public safety with the utmost seriousness, prioritizing the safety and well-being of our community members. It is important to note that the threats received in Springfield this week have not been substantiated and may be indicative of "swatting." Swatting refers to the act of falsely reporting a serious emergency, such as a bomb threat, to provoke a large-scale law enforcement response. We are actively collaborating with the Department of Public Safety and the Dayton office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to thoroughly investigate and trace the origin of these threats.
