FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — California voters will now get to decide in November whether to approve a new congressional map after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a package of redistricting bills on Thursday.
The plan, approved along party lines in both chambers of the Legislature, is aimed at giving Democrats an advantage in as many additional U.S. House seats in 2026.
The Assembly passed the measure 57-20, while the Senate approved it 30-8.
Gov. Newsom called the move a direct response to redistricting efforts in Texas, which passed its own new congressional map this week at the request of President Trump.
"They fired the first shot, Texas," Gov. News said. "We wouldn't be here if Texas had not done what they just did. Donald Trump didn't do what he just did."
Democrats in the Legislature praised the governor's decision, framing it as a way to push back against Republican influence in Washington.
"There is currently no check on Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., only people who do whatever he demands that they do," said Assemblymember Marc Berman, a Democrat. "But not here, not in California."
Assemblymember Joaquin Arambula, also a Democrat, said he hopes the move will eventually lead to a federal independent redistricting commissio.
"I put my faith thas there someone here in the great state of California who one day will be walking around being the president of the United States." Arambula said. "And that our governor then will be able to pass a federal independent redistricting commission for all states."
If voters approve the map, it will replace the exisiting on ethrough 2030.
California Republicans have filed a lawsuit seeking a federal investigation into the plan.
