ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — A Saturday celebration of life service and procession honored Pradeep Tamang, a Gwinnett County police officer who was killed on duty.

Tamang, 25, was shot and killed at a Stone Mountain motel on Sunday. Hundreds attended his memorial service at Lawrenceville’s 12Stone Church.

After the service, a procession led from the church to Tim Stewart Funeral Home, with members of the public lining the route in support.

WATCH THE SERVICE AND PROCESSION:

Several people spoke during the service, including Tamang’s coworkers, family members and fiancée. They said he was a caring person who loved his work as a police officer.

“He would come home from work and immediately tell me about his day — what he experienced, what he learned and the people he helped,” Tamang’s fiancée said. “... I hope his legacy lives on, continuing to inspire and give courage to everyone, especially law enforcement officers.”

Gwinnett County Police Chief James McClure said words aren’t sufficient to describe the loss.

“To the Tamang family, please know that your son, fiancée, brother, is held in the highest regard and will live on in our memories always,” he said. “He gave everything for this job, and for this community, and we are forever grateful.”

Gov. Brian Kemp has ordered flags in Gwinnett County and at the Georgia State Capitol to fly half-staff on Saturday in honor of Tamang.

On Sunday, Tamang and another officer, David Reed, were called to a Holiday Inn off E. Park Place Boulevard to investigate a fraud case. When they tried to take the suspect, 35-year-old Kevin Andrews, into custody for an outstanding arrest warrant out of DeKalb County, he allegedly opened fire and hit both officers.

Tamang died, while Reed was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery. The officers fired back, and Andrews was also injured. He now faces charges of malice murder, felony murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and two counts of aggravated assault against law enforcement.
