CAMILLA, Ga. (WALB) - The city of Camilla is recruiting poll workers for a special election.

That election will take place May 19. The city said in a Facebook post that they will offer compensation and training for anyone interested.

According to the election board’s website, “election day poll workers will help set up and open the polling place, greet voters, assist voters, and close the polling place.”

Qualifications

  • At least 16 years and older
  • U.S. Citizen and can read, write and speak English
  • Trained for each election
  • Must be able to work a full day at the polls, Election Days are approximately 12-14 hour days
  • Basic computer skills are helpful
  • Must not hold a current Public Office position
  • Is not a parent, spouse, child, brother, sister, father-in-law, mother-in law, son-in-law, daughter- in-law, brother-in-law or sister-in-law of a candidate whose name appears on the ballot in the precinct in which the poll worker will be assigned during a primary or election
  • Must not have ever been convicted of a felony

There are also requirements for poll workers outlined by Georgia law.

“Poll officers appointed pursuant to Code Sections 21-2-90 and 21-2-91 shall be judicious, intelligent, and upright citizens of the United States, residents of or otherwise employed by the county in which they are appointed except as otherwise provided in paragraph (2) of this subsection or, in the case of municipal elections, residents of or otherwise employed by the municipality in which the election is to be held or of the county in which that municipality is located, 16 years of age or over, and able to read, write, and speak the English language. No poll officer shall be eligible for any nomination for public office or to be voted for at a primary or election at which the poll officer shall serve. No person who is otherwise holding public office, other than a political party office, shall be eligible to be appointed as or to serve as a poll officer. A parent, spouse, child, brother, sister, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, or sister-in-law of a candidate shall not be eligible to serve as a poll officer in any precinct in which such candidate’s name appears on the ballot in any primary or election.”

Applications are required. To apply, visit the city of Camilla’s website or call 229-336-2220.

If you are selected, you will be required to attend mandatory training prior to serving in any capacity as a poll worker.

The application deadline is April 10 at 5 p.m. Return your completed application to City Hall or email to [email protected].

Advanced voting for the May 19 special election in Mitchell County are:

  • April 27 through May 2 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday
  • May 4 through May 9 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday
  • May 11 through 15 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday

Mail-in ballots can be sent in starting May 2. The last day to submit a mail-in ballot is May 8.
