Description
HOMERVILLE, Ga. (WALB) - Officials will open the City Auditorium as an emergency shelter for residents needing a place to stay during extreme winter weather conditions.
The Homerville Police Department said the shelter will operate from Sunday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. until Monday morning, Jan. 19.
Officials are urging residents to prepare for the extreme weather conditions ahead. Small amounts of snow can impact power and roads, according to the police department.
Safety recommendations
When weather conditions become hazardous, the Police Department’s goal is for everyone to be safe, officials said.
They advise residents to:
- Drive slowly and leave earlier
- Treat all intersections as four-way stops if power is lost
- Only drive after dark if it’s an emergency
- Give emergency services and public works crews time and space to do their jobs safely
- Check on neighbors, especially the elderly
