Description

PEARSON, Ga. (WALB) - The City of Pearson has released a public notification regarding a wastewater compliance issue at the City of Pearson Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Atkinson County.

You can find the notice below:

According to the notice, broken equipment in the treatment system led to elevated levels of total suspended solids (TSS) in treated wastewater.

For the period March 11–18, 2026, the plant’s effluent TSS was measured at 30 mg/L, which the city says was more than 1.5 times the permitted weekly limit—a threshold that qualifies as a spill under the notice.

The city says repairs are currently being made to the system. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division (EPD), Water Quality Division, has been notified.

The notice also states that signage has been posted and stream monitoring has been initiated in accordance with environmental regulations.

The notice says residents should not be alarmed, adding that samples will be collected to ensure there are no harmful effects.

It also states that there are no downstream water suppliers within 20 miles of the spill site.

The notice indicates that the local health department, media and legal authorities are being notified as required.
