ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Visual artists with a connection to Albany or love for the city are encouraged to enter a contest by the Harlem Renaissance Project.
The Harlem Renaissance Project recently launched “In Every Renaissance the Artists Lead the Way.” The contest calls on all creatives, regardless of age or background, to submit original art reflecting the spirit of Albany and its historic Harlem district.
“This isn’t just a contest—it’s a community calling,” said Latoya Cutts, with the Harlem Renaissance Corporation (HRC). “We’re inviting people who love Albany—past and present—to help reclaim our sense of place, restore vital spaces and reinvigorate a district that tells our story.”
The winning designs will be featured on Harlem Renaissance Project merchandise, with proceeds supporting the redevelopment of Albany’s Harlem district, including the new Harlem Legacy Wellness Center opening in December.
Additionally, four Fall 2025 Honorary Creative Directors will be named, one for each creative theme. Artists can choose one creative theme to inspire their design:
- “One City. One Voice. One Design.” — A unifying rally cry that highlights the power of collective expression through Albany’s cultural legacy. Whether you were raised on the southside, eastside, westside, northside, came here as a college student or as an adult- We are one. What do we all want for OUR community that brings us together?
- “From Harlem with Heart: Albany’s Creative Comeback” — Our rebirth as a city is in motion. What will your love letter to the city say? Inspire us by taking us back and then bringing us forward with excitement for the future.
- “Art of the Comeback: The Harlem Renaissance Project Challenge” — Speaks to our resilience, our unity and our artistry — we’ve always been unique. Some things are just so Albany. Tell the story in only the way that you can.
- “Crowned in Color: A Harlem Renaissance Tribute” — Blends culture, royalty, creativity and the deep pride felt in Albany’s roots. Tell the personal story of what Albany means to you through vivid visuals.
