Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - New FBI crime data shows violent and property crime declined across Georgia, but the trend has been less pronounced in Albany.

The data shows declines in several major crime categories statewide, including homicides, robberies, burglaries, property crime and motor-vehicle thefts.

In Albany, homicides decreased from 15 during the first eight months of 2024 to 11 during the same period in 2025 — a 27% decline.

Robberies also decreased by about 18%, while motor-vehicle thefts fell approximately 13% through August.

Aggravated assaults, however, increased slightly, rising by about 2% during the same period.

An Albany official said that while Georgia has experienced a significant overall reduction in crime, particularly violent crime, Albany’s numbers have remained relatively flat.

“In Albany, I will say that although Georgia has seen a significant reduction overall, particularly in the violent crime index in Albany, it has largely remained fairly flat, meaning that the reduction hasn’t been as significant. But the good thing is there hasn’t been a significant increase either.” Marlo Graham, FBI Special Agent Atlanta

Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies continue working together to target violent offenders and fugitives.

Officials are also encouraging Albany residents to report crimes and share information with law enforcement when they see or hear something that could help an investigation.

The FBI’s latest crime data reflects trends through the first eight months of the year and provides a look at how crime patterns are changing across Georgia and in individual communities.
