(TNND) — President Donald Trump has fired Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden – a move decried by congressional Democrats and celebrated by a conservative advocacy group.

The Associated Press reported that Hayden was notified of her firing in an email late Thursday from the White House’s Presidential Personnel Office.

The conservative American Accountability Foundation celebrated Hayden’s firing, calling her “woke & radical” in an X post.

Hayden was sworn in as the 14th Librarian of Congress in 2016, nominated to the position by President Barack Obama.

Hayden was the first woman and the first African American to lead the national library.

Democrat Chuck Schumer, the minority leader in the Senate, said Friday morning on social media that Trump’s firing of Hayden was “the latest foray in his relentless campaign to dismantle the guardrails of our democracy and punish public servants who don't bend to his every will.”

Schumer called Hayden “a trailblazer, a scholar, and a public servant of the highest order."

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries called Hayden’s firing “unjust” in a statement.

“Donald Trump’s unjust decision to fire Dr. Hayden in an email sent by a random political hack is a disgrace and the latest in his ongoing effort to ban books, whitewash American history and turn back the clock,” Jeffries said.
