ATMORE, Ala. (WTVM) - Jeremy Tremaine Williams is now dead.

He died by lethal injection at 6:16 PM after a process of roughly 20 minutes. The process began with the execution team reading his death warrant aloud to him over a microphone.

Williams was asked after the reading of his death warrant if he had any final words. The same member of the execution team who read the warrant held the microphone up to his mouth.

“I want to thank God for forgiving me for my sins so I can meet him in peace. Goodnight,” Williams said.

Williams was strapped to a hospital bed with seatbelts that resembled those commonly used in vehicles. Bright white fluorescant lights shone overhead in the hospital room-type setting.

Below is a timeline of the events leading up to and after his death from the perspective of media witnesses including WTVM’s Ben Stanfield. The times below are all central.

5:00 PM - Media witnesses board a white van and move from the media center near Fountain Correctional and travel to Holman, the home of Alabama’s Death Row. Media is screened by security a second time and moved to a holding room.

5:50 PM - Five media and three “Condemned Witnesses”, two women and one man, are moved simultaneously from the small holding room to the execution room, entering through a red door of the facility.

The “Condemned Witnesses” are typically family members of the convicted, although they were never publicly identified. The group is moved down a short hallway into viewing room “C”.

The sounds of a soft cry from a woman seated in the front row were the only noise in the room prior to the reading of the death warrant.

5:53 PM - The white curtain is pulled back from inside the execution room. Three men wearing a suit and tie stood in the room along with an Alabama Department of Corrections Officer in uniform. Williams looked toward the window of viewing room “C” as the curtain opened. This is when the death warrant was read and his final words were shared.

The visual at this time was Williams strapped to the hospital bed, wearing an olive-colored uniform. He was covered by a white sheet up to his chest.

After the microphone was turned off, the process of administering drugs began from behind a wall. In Alabama, it is a three-drug protocol. The first are an anesthetic. Williams smiled and said or sang words, moving his head from side to side as he did. His smile grew bigger as he seemingly fell into an anesthetic state. He yawned and his chest moved at a different pace afterward, in a shallow-type manner. One reporter referred to this as a convulsion. It happened twice, very quickly. Only one man in a suit remained in the room with Williams.

A woman on the front row wept more audibly as this transpired.

6:01 PM - A member of the execution team leaned over toward’s Williams from his left side, the side closest to the media observervation window and said “Mr. Williams” loudly. The suited member of the execution team then performed a consciousness check by pinching the inside of Williams’ arm above the elbow. He still made movements, one of which was a clinching of his left hand into a fist. His mouth was also moving slightly.

6:04 PM - The consiousness check process occurred again in the same manner. The suited member of the execution team leaned over and loudly said “Mr. Williams”. A pinch on the inside of the arm garnered no movement from the inmate this time.

6:05 PM - Different fluids began moving through the tubing into Williams’ left arm. All body movement ceased very quickly. Seconds later drool began to come out of his mouth from the left side. His head was tilted slightly towards the left.

The only audible sound continued to be the woman on the front row weeping, sobbing quietly, wearing a blue t-shirt with a paragraph of words. The bottom line of the paragraph read reflected in the glass said “Mama loves you”.

6:10 PM - The curtain closed.

6:16 PM - The State of Alabama officially declared Jeremy Tremaine Williams dead of lethal injection, capital punishment, at the age of 42.

After the execution, District Attorney Rick Chancey, Assistant DA Malory Hatfield, and Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor joined the media to talk about the aftermath.

The three did not get to witness the execution.
