DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) – A domestic welfare check in Douglas has led to the arrest of a wanted sex offender and the uncovering of multiple felony charges.
According to the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, on May 17, at around 1:27 p.m., officers from Douglas Police Department and CCSO responded to a call near Franklin Street reporting that a man was attempting to forcibly remove a woman from a residence.
Upon the arrival of officers, the suspect Dontavius Montrell Daniel, 29, of Douglas, fled on foot, prompting a pursuit through nearby properties. Officers deployed tasers during the chase, but Daniel continued to resist. He was eventually located hiding beneath a residence on Peachtree Street and taken into custody.
The investigation also revealed that Daniel had an active warrant issued by the Terrell County Sheriff’s Office.
Daniel now faces several misdemeanor and felony charges including:
- Giving false information to a law enforcement officer
- Willful obstruction of law enforcement officers
- Criminal trespass
The release further states that Daniel had been violating multiple conditions of the Georgia sex offender registry.
Authorities discovered Daniel had been living on West Franklin Street since January 2025, in violation of Georgia law that prohibits sex offenders from residing within 1,000 feet of protected areas such as churches and schools. Furthermore, he had failed to register both his current residence and his place of employment on Peterson Avenue, as required by law.
As a result, Daniel now faces multiple felony charges:
- Residing within 1,000 feet of a church as a registered sex offender
- Failure to register as a sex offender
- Providing false information and non-compliance with the sex offender registry
The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office has obtained warrants related to these felony offenses. Daniel remains in custody at the Coffee County Pre-Trial Detention Center.
