SOUTH GEORGIA (WALB) - The Douglas Police Department and Thomasville Police Department are warning residents of a text message scam targeting drivers.

Officials say scammers are claiming to be from the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS). The scam claims that victims have unpaid tickets and threatens license suspensions unless payment is made through a fake website.

Georgia DDS said it will never request payment or personal information through unsolicited text messages.

To protect yourself, Georgia DDS advises that you:

  • Don’t click on links in unsolicited text messages or emails claiming to be from DDS.
  • Verify your license status by checking your DDS Online Services account
  • Never share personal or financial information through unverified links or messages.

Georgia DDS advises that if you may have clicked on the fraudulent link or provided personal information, do the following:

  • Immediately contact your bank or credit card provider to secure your account.
  • Monitor your credit report for unusual activity.
  • Consider reporting the incident to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) here.
