What dates do I need to keep in mind for the runoff election?
Election Day for the runoff is Tuesday, June 16.
Friday, June 5, is the last day to request an absentee ballot for the runoff.
Unlike the primaries, the window being able to vote early is much shorter for a runoff.
The first day of early voting is Monday, June 8. However, some counties, including Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett and Cobb, are doing early voting starting Saturday, June 6.
The last day for early voting is Friday, June 12.
To find if the county you are registered to vote in is offering Saturday voting, go to the county’s elections website or call the county’s elections office.
How do I check my sample ballot? Find my voting precinct?
You can check your sample ballot online.
To do so:
- Go to mvp.sos.ga.gov.
- To login, you will need to enter the first initial of your name, your last name, county you are registered to vote in and date of birth.
- Then scroll until you see “View My Sample Ballot.”
- If you voted in primary election either Republican or Democrat, you will only see the ballot type of the party you voted with. You will be able to choose between Democratic Sample Ballot or Republican Sample Ballot if you voted nonpartisan in the primary election or did not vote in the primary election.
You can also find where your voting precinct is.
- Scroll down to “Polling Location.”
- You will see your precinct information, including name, address and directions.
How will voting work in the runoff election?
Generally the same in the primary election with a few differences.
- If you did vote in the primary, you can vote in the runoff but you will have to pick the same ballot type. For example, if you picked a Republican ballot, you will have to vote with a Republican ballot in the runoff. Same thing for Democrat. If you voted nonpartisan in the primary, you can choose either Democrat or Republican in the runoff.
- If you did not vote in the primary, you can still vote in the runoff if you are registered to vote. You will be able to choose between a Republican or Democrat ballot.
- For early voting, you can cast your ballot at any early voting location in the county you are registered to vote in.
- On Election Day, you will have to vote at your voting precinct.
Why is there a runoff election?
In Georgia, any race — local or statewide — where a candidate does not get more than 50% of the vote, automatically triggers a runoff with the two candidates who had the most votes.
Many of the primary races in May had multiple candidates, which will commonly trigger a runoff.
