Description
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) — Dougherty County has one of the highest estimated Alzheimer’s disease prevalence rates among seniors in the state and the country, according to data from the Alzheimer’s Association.
The association reports that an estimated 15.3% of Dougherty County residents age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s disease, well above Georgia’s statewide average of 12%.
The organization notes that Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia and primarily affects older adults. As life expectancy increases, health experts say communities across Georgia are likely to see a growing demand for caregivers, support services and medical resources.
