CAIRO, Ga. (WALB) — [UPDATE: June 16 at 3:35 p.m.] The following statement was sent to WALB from the Cairo Fire Department:
“CFD responded to a reported fire at the residence on Loblolly Lane last night. McKinnon confirmed this is the residence of the city manager. CFD and the fire marshal investigated. McKinnon said so far there is no evidence to suggest the fire was intentionally set and was accidental, but the investigation continues.”
[ORIGINAL ARTICLE] A fire broke out at about 10 p.m. on Monday, June 15, at Cairo City Manager Booker Gainor’s home, according to a close, reliable source.
The source said crews were called after flames broke out in Gainor’s backyard shed. The fire damaged his side-by-side and his car, but firefighters were able to get the flames under control before they spread to the home.
No one was hurt, and the fire was put out before any major damage was done to the house.
Following the fire, Gainor posted on Facebook overnight, saying in part, “I’m truly grateful for God’s grace and mercy for what could’ve been an horrific experience.”
He also thanked the Cairo Fire Department, Cairo Police Department and Grady County Emergency Medical Services for their assistance.
WALB reached out to the Cairo Police Department for more information. Officials said the incident report is not ready at this time.
Officials have not released any confirmed cause of the fire.
The fire came just days after Gainor reported being shot at.
Chief Deputy Kent Harvey with the Grady County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded on June 9 to a 911 call near Aldredge Road and Highway 188.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), Gainor was driving a UTV and had pulled over to make a phone call when a sedan drove up behind him, and someone fired shots.
So far, no arrests have been made in the incident.
