ATLANTA, Ga. (WALB) - Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock is speaking out against a federal bill he says would make it harder for Americans to vote.
The “Save America Act” would require voters to show proof of citizenship — such as a passport or birth certificate — each time they register to vote or update their address. The bill would also tighten photo ID requirements for in-person and mail voting and would no longer accept student ID cards as valid identification.
In a written statement, Warnock, a Democrat, said he supports requiring voters to verify their identity but pushed back on the bill’s broader claims.
“Let me be very clear: Americans should have to demonstrate that they are who they say they are when they cast a ballot, but Washington Republicans’ claims of widespread voter fraud are virtually non-existent,” Warnock said.
Republican Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville said he supports the bill and would back using a filibuster workaround to pass it with a simple 51-vote majority.
“Is it going to pass? No. We don’t have any opportunity to get it passed, because we’ve got even Republicans that are against it for some unknown reason. They don’t want voter ID,” Tuberville said. “We’ll fight this week. It’ll be a lot of debate.”
Tuberville acknowledged he is not certain Republicans have enough votes to pass the measure.
