DOUGLAS, Ga. (WALB) - Eight Georgia municipalities have new federal subgrant funding to support historic preservation projects. Douglas was awarded $6,780 to fund the World War II Flight Training Museum’s master plan. The Funding comes from the The Georgia State Historic Preservation Office.
“Local governments are integral to creating environments for lasting, community-backed preservation efforts. The varied preservation tools utilized by these grant recipients will help ensure their built heritage remains for future generations,”
Douglas is home to the 63rd Army Air Forces Contract pilot school. It was created to train pilots for the second world war. Over 5,000 aviation cadets enrolled at the school. The flight museum preserves it’s south Georgia history and the airmen that fought in WWII. The WWII flight training museums mission is to,
“Preserve, protect, develop, and advance the understanding of our nation’s aviation training heritage through collections, research, exhibits, and interpretation of the 63rd Flying Training Detachment. Its secondary mission is to try to maintain the heritage and as much of the historical integrity of the Raymond-Richardson Aviation School as possible.”
While there were 55 civilian primary flying training centers across the county the facility in Douglas remains the most intact with many training facilities still intact. For more information on museum hours and history click here.
The The Georgia State Historic Preservation Office grants are funded 60% by the federal government, with 40% coming from local funding. Georgia’s 100 certified local governments are eligible to apply for these matching grants. This Round of subgrants totaled 120,000 statewide.
