Description

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - We set a record high in the Good Life City today at 83 degrees, breaking the old record of 82 set in 2011. Temperatures will remain mild through the night tonight as southwest winds continue to pump warm, moist air into South Georgia from the Gulf. Lows tonight will be in the 65-70 degree range, which is on par with HIGH temperatures this time of year in our area. We may once again tie or break the record high tomorrow in Albany as the record high for February 20th is also 82 degrees and we are predicting a high of 83.

With the mild and humid conditions tonight, patchy fog may once again form in a few spots, especially areas east of Highway 319. Fog formation may be more widespread on Saturday morning as even more moisture pools ahead of an approaching cold front. Be sure to allow some additional drive time if you need to travel anywhere the next two mornings throughout SGA.

With the approaching cold front, we’ll see scattered showers and perhaps a rumble of thunder or two tomorrow. More organized thunderstorm activity is on tap for Saturday. The Storm Prediction Center has painted most of our area in a level 1 of 5 marginal risk for severe storms on Saturday, with gusty winds and perhaps some hail in the strongest storms. Unlike the last couple of setups, tornadoes look very unlikely as winds will be “unidirectional”; that is, they’ll be blowing in the same direction from ground level up, preventing storms from acquiring enough rotation to produce a tornado.

The cold front will clear the area late Saturday night, bringing an end to the rain and storms and the start of a much colder air mass infiltrating our neck of the woods. High temperatures may struggle to reach 60 degrees on Sunday and will be in the lower to middle 50s on Monday, some 25-30 degrees colder than what we’ve experienced this week. Some spots may see three nights of subfreezing lows starting Monday morning, with the coldest night coming Monday night into Tuesday morning. A widespread hard freeze is possible as lows will be in the mid to upper 20s.

Temperatures will quickly rebound later in the week, with another chance of showers entering the picture by Wednesday and Thursday.
