THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WALB) - As extreme frigid weather moves into the region, a local shelter announced plans to expand overnight operations to provide a safe, warm place for those in need.

Shelter officials say the facility will be open Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights, January 26–28, as temperatures are expected to fall to 32 degrees or below. The additional nights are part of ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable individuals from dangerous cold conditions.

Organizers say the shelter works to open whenever freezing temperatures are forecast, ensuring clients have a safe place to escape life-threatening weather.

Community members, churches, and organizations are encouraged to help support the expanded operations. Volunteers are needed to provide evening meals and morning takeaway breakfast bags. Donations of warm clothing, including socks, gloves, scarves, hats, and hand warmers, are also being accepted for individuals who must face the cold outdoors.

Shelter leaders note that operating additional nights creates increased costs and are asking those who are able to consider making a financial contribution. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the shelter relies on community support and limited grant funding to continue providing services.

Officials also ask the community to keep the shelter in their thoughts and prayers as they work toward expanding operations with the long-term goal of being open every night of the week.

Those interested in donating supplies, volunteering, or making a financial contribution are encouraged to contact the shelter directly or visit its official giving platforms for more information.
