ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — In the hours after the United States and Israel launched a major attack on Iran early Saturday, Georgia’s political leaders are flocking to social media to share their thoughts.
While the strikes are nationwide, some of the first appeared to hit areas around the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to the Associated Press. The move comes after American warships entered the region in the past few weeks, escalating already high tensions.

In a video posted to social media, President Donald Trump claimed Iran is developing nuclear weapons that could reach European allies and eventually the U.S., prompting the “massive and ongoing operation” dubbed Operation Epic Fury.
Trump also called on Iranians to unseat the current regime, which has been in power since the Iranian Revolution in 1979.
“Stay sheltered. Don’t leave your home. It’s very dangerous outside. Bombs will be dropping everywhere,” he said. “When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations.”
Here’s what Georgia’s leaders have to say.
Republicans
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp
Kemp’s message to the public was short and sweet: “Please join us in keeping our Armed Forces in our prayers,” he said on social media.

Gabriel Sterling, former chief operating officer of the Georgia Secretary of State’s office and current candidate for secretary of state
In a statement, Sterling called for America to stand with its troops and allies.
“For more than four decades, the evil regime born in 1979 has fueled instability, backed terrorism, attacked and murdered Americans, and chanted ‘Death to America,’” he wrote. ”... Strength and clarity now can prevent a wider war later. The best outcome is decisive action, restored deterrence, and a future where the Iranian people are free from a regime that has oppressed them for generations."

Rep. Mike Collins
Similar to Sterling, Collins emphasized the “Death to America” slogan.
“My prayers are with our brave warfighters as they work to rid the world of the largest state sponsor of global terror and protect America from the Iranian regime,” he said.
Under President Trump, the United States will no longer stand idly by while our enemies plot against us and chant “Death to America.”

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr
In a statement, Carr said Iran is a threat to America and the world if armed with nuclear weapons.
“America will defend our people, our freedoms and our allies,” he added. “Praying for the brave men and women of our Armed Forces.”
Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene
Unlike other Republicans, former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene condemned the operation in Iran.
“I did not campaign for this. I did not donate money for this. I did not vote for this, in elections or Congress,” she wrote on social media. “This is heartbreaking and tragic. And how many more innocent will die? What about our own military? This is not what we thought MAGA was supposed to be. Shame!”

Once a staunch Trump supporter, Greene stepped down from Congress in January, citing her disillusionment with Trump and some of his administration’s policy decisions.
Rep. Austin Scott
In a statement, Scott said the current Iranian regime has waged a war of terror against the United States and its allies for decades.
“They have funded and provided the weapons that killed tens of thousands of Americans. This regime is even more barbaric towards the people of Iran,” he said. “It is long overdue for the Iranian people to take their country back. This is a complex mission against a military that is better equipped than many we have faced in the last several decades.”

Rep. Barry Loudermilk
Loudermilk argues the operation in Iran isn’t an escalation in the ongoing conflict, but rather something that could lead to stabilization.
“By ending Iran’s ability to threaten the U.S. and its neighbors, we eliminate the chief obstacle to peace in the Middle East and opens the door to a more secure future for the region,” he wrote. “May God protect our brave troops and may God bless the United States of America.”

Democrats
Rep. Hank Johnson
Johnson emphasized that only Congress can declare war, “so this is also an attack on the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law,” he said.
“I strongly condemn this war of choice, and I call upon Republicans who control Congress to immediately call members back to Washington to exercise our constitutional responsibilities,” Johnson continued.

Rep. Nikema Williams
Williams said Trump has betrayed his campaign promise of peace.
“Here we are again, waking up to him waging another illegal war,” she wrote on social media. “His reckless strikes in Iran, without Congressional authorization, are unconstitutional. They put American troops at risk and drag us toward another endless conflict the American people did not ask for. Congress must pass a War Powers Resolution NOW.”

Adopted in the wake of the Vietnam War in 1973, the War Powers Resolution requires the president to notify the Speaker within 48 hours that troops have been deployed into hostile situations if war hasn’t been officially declared. It also says troops must be withdrawn within 60 days, unless Congress authorizes more action.
Sen. Raphael Warnock
In a statement, Warnock agreed that the current Iranian regime is “brutal and destabilizing” and can’t have a nuclear weapon — but he doesn’t believe this “dramatic and deadly escalation” is the solution.
“A wider regional conflict would not make us safer, it would increase instability and uncertainty at a moment when our focus should be on the pressing problems we face at home,” he said. “... the President has not explained why diplomatic talks that were underway this week are no longer viable and diplomacy no longer available. Instead, he has said in word and deed that this is war, a power that the constitution reserves for Congress alone. ”
