Description
EARLY COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - Employees at the Cedar Springs Containerboard mill were told Wednesday, May 14 that operations at the mill will permanently close later this year.
Most positions will be eliminated by August 1, according to Georgia-Pacific’s announcement. They said approximately 535 jobs will be impacted.
The company did not provide a specific closure date.
Various factors influenced this difficult decision. Ultimately, we do not believe that the mill can competitively serve our customers in the long term. This decision has nothing to do with the quality of work of Georgia-Pacific’s employees at the Cedar Springs mill.
The company goes on to say they intend to help Cedar Springs employees during this transition by providing access to local job placement resources and support agencies.
Earlier this month, Georgia-Pacific also closed Emporia Plywood mill in Emporia, Virginia.
This is a developing story, and we will keep you updated.
