ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Georgia is used to bright lights zipping across the sky as home to the world’s busiest airport and stars landing for the state’s robust film and television production industry. But on Thursday, something different flashed across the sky and left its mark on the state — a meteor.

Many Georgians were able to see a fireball, which the National Weather Service had said was likely a meteorite or space junk, flash across the sky on Thursday afternoon. NASA confirmed it was a meteor Thursday night.

As of 2022, 27 meteorites have landed in the Peach State, according to Karisa Zdanky, astronomy program manager at Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville.

Zdanky said she believes the likely meteorite that fell Thursday is probably from the Beta Taurids, a daytime meteor shower.

Meteorites, Zdanky said, usually land in open areas and rarely damage property.

The meteor on Thursday was the likely culprit behind damage to a home in Henry County.

Henry County Emergency Management said it sent crews to the home after its owner reported at least one rock crashing through their roof. The agency said it was working to find out if the incident was related to the meteor.

In 2009, a meteorite hit a home in Cartersville. The house that the meteorite hit was only seven miles from the Tellus Science Museum.

The National Weather Service said the now-confirmed meteor was spotted from Macon to Upstate South Carolina.

“Doesn’t surprise me at all,” Zdanky said of how many people spotted it.
