ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – The Albany Police Department has released new details about a tense standoff at an apartment complex Monday morning that left one officer injured and ended with the suspect in custody.
The Albany Police Department (APD) responded to reports of a disorderly conduct incident at 205 Slater King Drive around 5:26 p.m., While attempting to make contact with the suspect, later identified as David Edmond Jr., 25, officers reported that he became increasingly irate and refused to cooperate. Edmond allegedly made multiple references to exercising his second amendment rights and was seen with a firearm inside the apartment.
As tensions escalated, APD brought in a supervisor and tactical units to de-escalate the situation. Despite repeated efforts to negotiate face-to-face, Edmond refused to open the door, communicating only through a window.
Officers eventually attempted to make entry using a key and a shield after announcing themselves. Upon opening the door, Edmond fired multiple shots, striking Corporal Price in the arm. Officers quickly pulled Price to safety as he was “losing a lot of blood,” according to reports.
Cpl. Woodall, a trained negotiator, was able to make phone contact with Edmond, convincing him to allow officers to safely extract the wounded officer. He later negotiated the safe release of Edmond’s girlfriend and children from the apartment. EMS treated him on the scene before he was transported for further care.
After hours of tense negotiations, Edmond surrendered without further incident. He now faces multiple charges related to the shooting and standoff.
