Description
The January 2023 tragedy in Duxbury, Massachusetts, shocked the nation when Lindsay Clancy was charged with the murders of her three young children, Cora (5), Dawson (3), and eight-month-old Callan.
As the high-profile murder trial unfolds in Plymouth Superior Court, the defense’s argument that Clancy was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis has brought a haunting and urgent focus to maternal mental health. The case has forced a deeply painful but necessary conversation about the extreme crises that can follow childbirth.
Chris Pisano, evening anchor at Western Mass News, recalled the sudden shift in his newsroom when initial reports of a tragic scene in wealthy, quiet Duxbury transformed into a dark, incomprehensible reality. Pisano shared how parents across New England and the country immediately internalized the horror, forced to grapple with a level of violence that seemed entirely impossible in their close-knit, peaceful suburbs. The initial shock quickly evolved from a local crime report into a national discussion on parental stress and mental illness.
Crucially, the trial has pushed a vital medical distinction into the public vernacular: the difference between postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. While depression is widely recognized, the far rarer and more severe postpartum psychosis can cause a mother to lose touch with reality, a state the defense argues left Clancy unable to distinguish right from wrong. Pisano noted that the case has prompted other mothers to courageously speak out about their own experiences with severe postpartum OCD, depression, and intrusive thoughts—conditions that are too often hidden due to societal stigma.
