LEESBURG, Ga. (WALB) - Growth and moving the city forward is what leaders say continues to be top of mind when it comes to downtown development in Leesburg.

Officials in City Hall are giving updates on downtown projects and discussing ways to update the Leesburg Comprehensive Plan.

In January of this year, company employees with Foresite Group LLC presented what could be part of this new plan, a city center.

On Wednesday night, community members, stakeholders, business owners, and county and city officials all put in their two cents about developments they believe will benefit Downtown Leesburg.

“This is going to be a pretty comprehensive plan, and it’s going to take over six months of communication between the Foresite group and our stakeholders that will be at this meeting tonight. We want to have a plan for Leesburg that would be what everybody in the community wants us to become,” said Leesburg City Manager Bob Alexander.

Alexander says the city did upgrade the comprehensive plan last year to meet the Department of Community Affairs guidelines, but felt they needed another plan that consisted of more community involvement.

Wednesday night’s planning meeting was the first of many to come. The meeting’s will be held once a month on every third Wednesday.

Foresite has a detailed schedule they’ll follow each meeting. City leaders say they’re excited to see what the future of Leesburg will look like once plans are implemented.

“The Leesburg Downtown Development Authority has been meeting for over the past year or so and we’ve never had as much turnout,” Chairman of the Leesburg Downtown Development Authority We’ve had a great turnout today with stakeholders in the community wanting to have input on how we want Leesburg to look in the future, how we want to grow, and what direction we want to grow in."
