SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The whole week leading up to Mother’s Day is a busy one for local flower shops as people rush to secure beautiful flowers for the wonderful moms in their lives.

WTOC spoke with the Pink House Florist in Savannah to see how the extra surge in customers is impacting business at the shop.

Mother’s Day is the Pink House Florist’s biggest holiday of the year.

A florist our team spoke with says during the week leading up to Mother’s Day, they’re constantly in motion, taking orders and delivering flowers.

Consumer spending on Mother’s Day is expected to reach $34.1 billion this year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Flowers are overwhelmingly the most popular gift to give mothers for the occasion.

Elizabeth Scott with the Pink House Florist says they’ve been planning several months in advance for the holiday with many of their preparations kicking off in early spring.

Scott says their shop is staying open Sunday for deliveries and to make sure all of their customers’ mothers receive beautiful, fresh flowers.

“There’s a lot of work that goes into it. Flowers are like food. They have to be processed. They have to be taken care of,” said Scott. “And so, there’s a process that these fresh flowers go through in order for us to maintain them and deliver them to the home.”

84% of adults in the U.S. are expected to celebrate Mother’s Day, according to the National Retail Federation.

Scott says Sunday’s holiday is bigger than Valentine’s Day for business because not everyone has a sweetheart, but nearly everyone has a mother.

WTOC also caught up with one customer buying flowers in the shop for his mom who’s had a challenging past year.

“She had breast cancer—just coming off of surgery," said Samuel Bryant. “My sister, my little brother and I, my wife, my daughter, also our son and father, we all just love her very much.”

Scott also says the shop has more than just fresh flowers for sale. They have items like candy and balloons, but most importantly, silk memorial flowers for moms who are no longer with us.

“Being someone’s florist is a very personal relationship, and it’s something that we take very seriously. But that’s one of the services that we offer is going to the cemetery and placing flowers for the family,” said Scott.

Scott says delivering lasting-floral arraignments to cemeteries like Greenwich and Bonaventure is a top priority on holidays like Mother’s Day.

This Mother’s Day is also a special one for the Pink House Florist.

The shop is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and florists at the shop are hoping to serve Savannah and surrounding areas for many more years to come.
